Faux finish samples

  • Colorwashing is a faux finish with its origins in fine art. To create a colorwash, a base color is applied to the wall and then it is topped with a contrasting glaze. The brush marks are intentionally placed to provide depth and texture to the surface. A colorwash can be used to create the look of frescos, lime washed surfaces, Mediterranean villas and more. Colorwashing is an appealing alternative to a flat color and can be used with any type of decorating style.
  • Sponging is another faux finish technique that is used to create depth and texture on walls or furniture. Glaze is sponged over a flat base coat to create a wide range of effects, ranging from light and airy to rich, deep tonal contrasts.
  • Rag Rolling is an elegant, "old world" style finish that is excellent for covering poor wall surfaces. This effect can be used to soften a room for a country decor or it can create a striking modern effect.
  • Stone Blocking is an excellent way to make a space appear grand and luxurious. The creation of stone blocks is an involved and detailed process that has a large payoff in its decorative impact.
  • Dragging, or striae, has evolved from the decorative art of wood graining. A long haired brush is dragged through glaze to reveal the base coat below in thin lines. This is an elegant and dramatic faux finish that can only be used on smooth surfaces and walls that are perfectly level vertically.
  • Metallic Finishes can be used for a contemporary look to one of aged elegance. Your furniture, cabinets, and lighting fixtures can all be transformed to compliment your decor. Lead, iron, verdigris, rust, and gold and silver leaf are all looks that Caren Frost Olmsted Design can achieve for you!

Marbling & Wood Graining can be used in any location where one might find marble or wood normally- columns, fireplaces, furniture, floors, wall panels- the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
